Odontogenic pain refers to pain initiating from the teeth or their supporting structures, the mucosa, gingivae, maxilla, mandible, or periodontal membrane.  Toothache is caused by the dental pulp or infection within the canal space. To properly diagnose dental pain, a series of clinical tests are performed in combination with radiographic examination.  Proper diagnosis is imperative because often with dental pain, the source and location of the pain are not one in the same.
